French Toast Bread Bowl

This is a fun and delicious twist on classic french toast and quite possibly the BEST version of French Toast I’ve ever tried! Not only is the bread bowl done to perfection, but it is literally a bowl you can fill with every ingredient you love!

Instead of a slice of bread dipped in an egg mixture, it is made with a bread bowl. Then, the bread bowl is cooked in an air fryer with no griddle or skillet needed!

French Toast Bread Bowl Ingredients

Bread Bowls: You can buy bread bowls or make your own. If you buy bread bowls, 5-inch bread bowls (or unseasoned kaiser rolls) are perfect for an individual serving. I will also give you ideas for the tops of the bowls, too!

Fresh Fruit: I used a combination of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries, and raspberries. You need about 4 cups of fruit; (it is about 1 cup per bread bowl) you can use your favorite kind of fruit or mix it up as I did.

Toppings: Of course, I had to add some whipped cream, pure maple syrup, and confectioners’ sugar to really sweeten up the breakfast.

How to Carve a Bread Bowl

Simply take a serrated knife and cut off the top of the bread bowl. Remove the top. Using your hand or a spoon, gently pull the inner bread from the bread bowl, leaving up to an inch of thickness at the bottom and sides. Once the bread is removed, it is now ready to be dunked into the egg mixture and cooked.

What Can I Do with the Tops of the Bread Bowls?

When creating a bread bowl, you need to cut off the top and scoop out some bread. But, what do you do with the bread you cut off? You don’t have to waste it, that’s for sure!

You could cut it into strips to make air fryer french toast sticks. Just dip the strips into the egg mixture and air fry for 3-4 minutes at 360°F. Or you could cut it into cubes to make croutons. For croutons, air fry them for 3-4 minutes at 360°.

Does the Bread Get Soggy?

Nope! After testing this recipe extensively (it doesn’t exist on the internet!) I was delighted to see the results replicated over and over again. A slightly crunchy exterior and a perfectly soft interior to the bread.

Can I Make This in the Oven?

If you don’t have an air fryer, or you are using it for another breakfast like an Air Fryer Cinnamon Roll, you can make these French Toast Bread Bowls in the oven. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Place the dipped bread bowls onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Then, add the fruit!

  1. Hi! Curious on when coating the bread bowl do you only do the outside? Do you coat the inside at all? Instructions lead me to believe outside only but I am thinking the interior would then be hard/toasted.

Thank you for a great new breakfast option!

    1. Hi Britt! Yes, you carve out and remove the middle of the bread so that it is a bowl. Then the entire bowl is submerged in the egg mixture.
