Chocolate Reese’s Cake Mix Cookies are cookies made with chocolate cake mix and topped with chopped mini Reese’s peanut butter cups. I love from-scratch cookies (there are hundreds on my website!) but also love the convenience of grabbing a cake mix! If you love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter, be sure to also try my Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip Cookies.
Reese’s Cake Mix Cookies
It doesn’t get much easier than cookies from a box of cake mix. But, don’t let the ease of these cookies make you think they aren’t worth making. Any recipe that combines chocolate with peanut butter is a winner in my book! The chocolate cookie dough can be mixed together in no time and then is topped with mini Reese’s peanut butter cups.
Cookies Ingredients
With just six ingredients and less than 30 minutes, you can get a batch of homemade cookies ready to share!
Butter: Make sure the butter is at room temperature for best results.
Cake Mix: Grab a box of dry cake mix to use in this recipe. Or, use my homemade chocolate cake mix.
Eggs: Just like the butter, make sure the eggs are also at room temperature. (Cold eggs can curdle the batter.)
Sour Cream: The tablespoon of sour cream added to the cookie dough tenderizes the cookies.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: Chop up about 10 mini Reese’s peanut butter cups to add to the tops of the cookies before baking.
Why Cake Mix in Cookies?
Using cake mix to make cookies can provide several benefits over making them from scratch. Some of these benefits include:
- Convenience: Cake mix saves time and effort as it already contains pre-measured ingredients.
- Consistency: Cake mix ensures a consistent result each time you bake.
- Variety: Cake mixes are available in a wide range of flavors and types!
- Accessibility: For new bakers, using a cake mix can be less intimidating than starting from scratch.
- Cost-effectiveness: Using a cake mix can sometimes be more cost effective than buying individual ingredients.
- Customization: You can customize the final product by adding in chocolate chips, nuts, dried fruit, or anything you like!
I have many from-scratch recipes on my website but do like to share a wide variety of options. And these cookies are yum!
Can I Freeze these Cookies?
Yes! To freeze the cookies, first, let them cool completely. When cool, place the cookies on a lined baking sheet and set them in the freezer for about an hour. After they have frozen, transfer the cookies to a freezer-safe container to store.

Great chocolate/Reeses recipe quick and easy
These tasted delicious. I had to add a bit of water because the batter was so thick my mixer had a hard time mixing it.
