The Grimace Cocktail is a purple-colored alcoholic drink made with vodka, blue curacao, grenadine, and grape-flavored Powerade. For another colorful adult beverage, try my Drunken Mermaid!

The Grimace Cocktail

Just like the McDonald’s Grimace character is purple, so is this drink (hence, the name). I originally had this drink at a local golf course where it was called a purple people eater or SKOL (for the Minnesota Vikings). It is a grape-flavored cocktail that does pack a punch. But, you won’t grimace (get it?) as you sip on it; it is refreshingly delicious!

Ingredients for The Grimace Cocktail

Ingredients & Substitutions

This adult beverage is made with just four ingredients (well, five if you count the ice).

Vodka: Choose your favorite brand of vodka to use in the drink.

Blue Curacao: This is a blue liqueur with a citrus flavor, similar to triple sec. If you can’t find Blue Curacao at your local liquor store, you can substitute Triple Sec or Grand Marnier.

Grenadine: Grenadine is a non-alcoholic syrup used in cocktails. It is made from pomegranate juice in a similar method to making simple syrup. It gives the drink a nice color. You could also use pomegranate molasses or pomegranate juice as a substitute.

Powerade: Powerade is a sports drink made by the Coco-Cola company. I used grape Powerade. You could also substitute grape Gatorade (made by PepsiCo). I did not use the entire bottle of the drink; I simply needed enough to top off the drink.

  1. When tended bar 25+ yrs ago we had a shooter that was the same recipe except the power aid. We added a splash of club soda. It was called a “grape Nehi”. Great drink!
