Classic White Russian

This classic drink was concocted in 1949 along with the Black Russian, which is a White Russian without cream. It did not originate in Russia; the name was given because of the vodka in the drink. It is a popular after-dinner drink that became even more popular from the movie, ‘The Big Lebowski’. I also have a Peppermint White Russian that you may want to try.

White Russian Ingredients

Ice: This drink is most commonly served over ice; I prefer crushed ice in an old-fashioned or low ball glass.

Vodka: Vodka is the primary ingredient in a classic White Russian. Use your favorite brand to use. If you don’t have vodka around, you could substitute rum (try spiced rum over the holidays), gin, bourbon, or even Bailey’s Irish Cream.

Kahlua: Kahlua is a coffee-flavored liqueur. You could also use a shot of espresso or brewed coffee in place of the Kahlua if the vodka is enough liquor for you.

Heavy cream: Heavy cream is at least 30% fat (as opposed to half and half, which is only 10-18% fat). In a pinch, you could add milk or even coffee creamer.

What does this Drink Taste Like?

This drink does pack a punch, but it is a sippable drink that tastes like an iced coffee for grown-ups. It is a little bit sweet, but not overly sweet. Serve the drink with some chocolate-covered Ritz crackers or chocolate-covered pretzels.
