New Year’s Eve Crack is an addicting, but easy-to-make treat made with saltine crackers, butter, brown sugar, chocolate, and festive sprinkles. Once you ‘crack’ into this treat, you will not be able to stop! I also have Halloween Saltine Toffee (Crack) with orange and black sprinkles.
New Year’s Eve Crack
The rich buttery toffee over crispy crackers covered in chocolate is just about enough to do me under. Also known as Christmas Crack, cracker toffee candy, and saltine toffee cookies (just to name a few), I would suggest that you serve and share this at your New Year’s Eve parties unless you want to devour an entire sheet of this treat on your own! The crunchy snack is an easy finger food to make and will be a hit at all of your holiday gatherings!
Ingredients & Substitutions
Crackers: I used a little over a sleeve of saltine crackers for this treat. But, you can easily make more if your sheet pan is large enough. Or, try this recipe with Ritz or graham crackers.
Toffee: The toffee topping is simple to make with just brown sugar and butter.
Chocolate: I prefer semi-sweet chocolate chips in this recipe. However, you could also try it with dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, or even butterscotch chips!
Sprinkles: Depending on the occasion or festivity, you can customize this treat by adding different color sprinkles to the top. Gold seems to go with a New Year’s Eve celebration, but add red and green sprinkles for Christmas or a variety of colors for a birthday or other party.
Additional Toppings: Nuts like almonds and peanuts are delicious on this treat. Or, add some crushed pretzels, which would also be delicious!
How to Store
Once made and set, New Year’s Eve Crack can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. It will last up to a week at room temperature, but a little longer in the refrigerator.
Can I Freeze New Year’s Eve Crack?
Yes! In fact, I love freezing this treat and grabbing a piece to satisfy my sweet tooth. When storing the pieces in a freezer-safe container, separate the layers with parchment or wax paper to keep them all from sticking together. It will last about a month in the freezer.
New Years Eve Crack
Ingredients
- 48 saltine crackers
- 1 cup (2 sticks / 227 g) unsalted butter
- 1 cup (200 g) light brown sugar, packed
- 1 ½ cups (273 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ¼ cup sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Arrange the crackers, salted side down in a single layer on the lined baking sheet. Set aside.
- In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, add the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Allow the mixture to boil for 3-5 minutes, or until the butter is completely melted and the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat. Carefully pour the mixture over the crackers.
- Bake for 3-5 minutes, or until the butter and sugar mixture begins to bubble.
- Carefully remove the pan from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the crackers. Allow the chocolate chips to sit for about one minute, or until they start to soften and melt.
- Using an offset spatula, spread the melted chocolate over the crackers.
- Immediately add sprinkles, if using.
- Transfer the pan to the refrigerator for about an hour, or until set. If you need it set a little quicker, you can place the pan in the freezer.
- To serve, break the New Year's Eve crack into smaller pieces.
